Steve and Peter "Dads El Camino"

-September 19, 2011-

On September 18, I played Bears Hideaway in San Juan Bautista. I was joined in the last hour by a local restaurant owner, Peter Lottermoser, owner and cook at Joan and Peters German Restaurant. Peter closed his restaurant down just in time to join me for my last set and also entertained the crowd with a few solo harmonica songs. Peter joined me on "Pirate Looks At Forty", "Dads El Camino" and "Drift Away". This was not rehearsed and Peter nailed it like a true pro. Peter migrated from Germany in 1961 and made his mark in the United States as an exceptional chef, notably an excecutive chef with Hyatt Corporation. He opened his restaurant in San Juan Bautista with his lovely wife Joan in 1980.
I will be back at Bears Hideaway for one final show this year on October 1 at 1pm. I will be stopping by Joan And Peters for their world famous Ruben sandwich before the show and get Peter to join me again. Peter has the same passion of entertaining as he does for cooking fine German food, so I don't think I will have to twist his arm. Hope to see you there.

Song And Wine Fest 2011 Song And Wine Fest 2011

- June 7, 2011 -

After spending a week watching the Weather Channel App on my Droid and keeping a close eye on the weather, The first Song And Wine Fest went on despite the rain. After planning this event since January, we thought a heat wave would be the worst that could happen, and that wouldn't be so bad. With the rain starting early Saturday morning, we decided the show must go on and we moved the event inside into the Parkfield Cafe.

Kate Kilbane and Band came down from San Francisco and was the perfect opening band for what is going to be an annual event. Steve Key booked most of the songwriters which included Gary Garrett, Jody Mulgrew with Erin Inglish, Young Ireland, Steve McFessell, Amy Obenski and Chi McClean. Afterwards I performed a short set then made way for our featured act, Terry Furlong. Terry is a former lead guitarist for the Grass Roots. He performed Grass Roots favorites along with some of his own solo music. Terry has a way of connecting with and audience by telling stories of each song he plays, telling little known trivia of some cover songs he plays. He also played for a sold out crowd at Mondo Cellars in Paso Robles the night before.

The wineries involved with the tasting event included Kiame Cellars, Aimee June Vineyards, Wild Eye Vineyards, Malloy O'Neil Vineyards and Sculpterra Winery. According to Mike Luther, the wineries were all happy with how the event turned out and will more than likely be back next year, along with at least one additional winery who requested we include them next year.

The talent of the various songwriters involved this year was amazing and we are grateful to have had them involved this year. Go to the Song and Wine Fest web page to check out photos of the event. Thank you to everyone who participated and attended. We will be doing it again next year on June 2. We will be busy scouting acts throughout the year to make next year even bigger and better (and hope it doesn't rain)

The time has come! What started as coffee shop talk back in January will be a reality this Saturday. The first Song And Wine Fest will kick off at noon this Saturday June 4rth. I have had a great time organizing this event with my good friend Mike Luther and look forward to sharing the stage with some very talented singer/songwriters. A diverse lineup of talent and a veteran who has some great stories to share. Bring your lawn chairs, picnic lunch, kids, picnic blanket and come enjoy a relaxing day in Parkfield Ca. -MAY 4, 2011-

Well organizing the Song And Wine Fest and trying to find time to write has nearly consumed my time lately. With our first Song And Wine Fest just a month away, it is finally comming together and I can't wait until the first act takes the stage.
It has been quite an experience so far trying to organize an event like this but with the help of my good friend Mike Luther, it has been a pretty smooth road so far. Sure we have changed a few ideas and bent a few rules but thats what I have found it takes to make this first event come together to be a success.

I hope everyone who see's this and likes good old homemade music, will join us on June 4rth for the first of what promises to be a long annual event.  Just click on that little ticket at the top of this page to get your tickets.

I played to a packed patio at Mondo Cellars in Paso Robles on April 24rth. On the patio were some special friends Franz Kleynhans who had traveled from South Africa to see the show and say hello and his son a great friend Francois. I played an acoustic version Johhny Clegg's, Great Heart, which includes a couple of lines of Zulu. Johnny Clegg is one of Africa's great singer /songwriters. I had the pleasure of joining Franz and Francois and families for a South African meal prepared by the family which, was pretty damn good.

It was quite an evening learning about the South African culture and comparing both our cultures. Franz invited me down to South Africa four a tour and to play some music. I think I hear the sound of African drums calling me down there in the near future. That could be quite the musical journey blending two cultures into music.

Time to get back to work, writing, organizing and sample some more wine for the fest!
Take care my friends.

Till next time,

Guga mzimba (body grow old)

sala 'nhliziyo  (but heart remain behind)

Ron Grant Family Benefit King City Ron Grant Family Benefit King City

-March 21,2011-

It's been a busy month since we last brought you some news. Steve has been busy planning the first anual Song and Wine Fest which will take place June 4rth. Steve has teamed up with Mike Luther and plans are all comming together with sponsorships and participating wineries. All of the singer/songwriters have been booked and it is shaping up to be a great relaxing day of wine and singer/songwriter music. Check out the Song and Wine Fest web page ***HERE***

Also in March, Steve played songwriter nights in San Luis Obispo and Santa Margarita put on by Songwriters @ Play. He played some new songs and each one was well recieved by the audiences. Plans for a new album are on-going, hopefully by the fall.

On March 19th, it was a benefit in King City for the Ron Grant Family. Ron Grant passed away from cancer suddenly this past February and King City came together in a big way to help his wonderful family offset the medical cost's. An estimated 500 people showed up to generously support this cause to the tune of around $95,000. Steve played an hour and a half set to kick things off and claims, "I am somewhat amazed but never surprised when it comes to the generosity of the people in South Monterey County. Anytime a benefit like this is organized, the farmers, ranchers and business's always open up their pocket books and generously give, That's just what they have always done! This fundraiser was no different and with the amount of people that showed up and the money spent on the auction items, you would never know the economy was suffering".  Steve grew up most of his life in King City and always enjoys being a part of giving back to the community.

Don't miss Steve's upcomming gigs, April 2nd at the Parkfield V6 Ranch Grill, April 16, Bears Hideaway wine bar in San Juan Bautista and continuing where he left off last year at Mondo Cellars in Paso Robles on April 29. See the
Upcomming Events Tab for more info.

Till next time,

lets go Flying Through The Heart Of A Thunderhead!

-Feb. 24, 2011-

Hello All! Just got back from a short trip down to
Prescott Arizona where I met and visited with true gentleman and seasoned rock and roller from the late 60's and 70's.

My good friend Mike Luther and I arrived in Prescott  Tuesday afternoon and checked into our hotel. By the way, Prescott  is a beautiful high dessert town that on this day had about 3 inches of snow on the ground in places as a snow storm had passed through the previous weekend. We drove down to the Cattleman, a little greasy bar and grill with the best rib eye steak in town (Probably).

Mike and I wound down our 9 hour drive with a couple of New Castles. Halfway through our second, in comes walking a gray haired (lots of hair still) man smiling and greeting Mike, "Hey man, it's great to see you!" I could tell this was the aged rock and roll guitar player Mike told me about and brought me to Prescott to meet.

Now when I say aged, I'm talking gray hair and a few lines, but this guy still has the energy of a 16 year old kid who dreams of being a rock star. Terry Furlong has lived this dream, and I might add, as any rock star that has LIVED through the 70's, is happy to tell his stories. Terry replaced Creed Bratton (The Office) in 1969 as the Grass Roots lead guitarist.  The places he has played, the legends he has backed up, and the people he calls his friends are a who's who of rock and roll.

I was all ears listening to the stories Terry had to tell. Terry would recall and tell such story's, such as filling in one night as a guitar player for Dobie Gray at the last minute in a club down in L.A. to his days of playing with Delaney and Bonnie and hanging out with the likes of Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge and Dave Mason, to name a few. Mike convinced him a few months ago, that he needed to write a book about all of this, which Terry is currently doing. I don't want to give away too much of what will be in Terry’s book, and there is still much much more that I have yet to hear. One of the coolest thing I heard that night, is that Terry formed a band back in the 70's and hired Michael McDonald (Doobie Bros.) because he needed a higher octave voice. At some point Terry ended up firing McDonald. He's says they laugh about it when they see each other today.

On Wednesday, after Terry performed for a private luncheon at a local hotel, we spent the afternoon at his house in his small office. A gold record from his Grass Roots days hangs above his desk, and piles of notes and songs that he is currently working on fill the room. We discussed songwriting, the history of songwriting and the business in general. We played a couple my songs together and decided we are going to co-write a song we will play at the Song And Wine Fest.
A couple of things I learned from Terry on this visit was that you are never too old to learn new things in this business of songwriting and playing guitar. He is also proof that if you don't take this business too seriously, and you write for the love of music, it is a fun and therapeutic process that keeps you feeling young.

Terry will be at our first Song And Wine Fest on June 4. I know he would be more than happy to meet you and share some of these same stories.

-Feb. 8, 2011-

Hello everybody! If you are here it means you have found my webpage. Please bookmark it to stay up to date with all my musical events.

I am looking forward to 2011, as I am looking to play more venues I have never played, in towns I have never played before. I am particularly excited about the first annual "Song and Wine Fest", taking place June 4rth in Parkfield California.

I have always wanted to get a bunch of songwriters together and throw a big party. With the help of my great friend Mike Luther, we will be throwing that party this June. Actually, think of it as a day of music from some great songwriters, throw in some top wineries from the central coast and it will be a great all day picnic in the peaceful confines of the Varian Ranch Resort in Parkfield, California.

With commitments so far from some top wineries in the Paso Robles area, we are expecting the first Song And Wine Fest to be an experience in which you will want to attend on an annual basis. We will also be featuring some of the top songwriters who have performed this past year with Songwriters At Play. Our featured performer will be Terry Furlong, a songwriter who has written songs recorded by Three Dog Night, Michael McDonald and the Grass Roots. Terry was also the lead guitarist for the Grass Roots from 1969 to 1972 and has performed on the Ed Sullivan Show.

I am looking forward to a great year of song and I hope you will continue to check this page for more information on my show dates and the Song And Wine Fest.
